Reading the results

  • Monthly payment is the standard amortized payment. Some online lenders bill weekly; divide by 4.33 for a rough weekly figure.
  • Total interest is what the loan costs over the full term if you make every payment on schedule.
  • Origination fee is usually deducted from proceeds, so a $100,000 loan with a 3% fee lands $97,000 in your account while you repay $100,000.
  • Total cost including fee is the number to compare against an advance’s cost of capital on the advance calculator.

Rules of thumb

  • Lenders want payments to fit inside about 80% of your free monthly cash flow (a debt service coverage ratio of 1.25). If the monthly payment is more than that, expect a smaller approval or a longer term.
  • A longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest. For equipment, match the term to the asset’s useful life.
  • Fixed rates protect thin margins. Ask whether the rate is fixed for the full term.
